Atlassian

Makers of JIRA, Confluence, and Bitbucket

I was the first US writer hired by Atlassian for their San Francisco office. Later, I became a Lead Writer and led the successful effort to expand the team there.

  • Sole writer documenting Atlassian Bitbucket – a hosted DVCS service. The product's audience includes repository users, administrators, and programmers. Wrote from API Reference from code in Django Python and used Apigee to deliver interactive REST browser. Customers voted the documentation best product feature in 2013.

  • Wrote the initial FAQ and guide for the Atlassian Marketplace. The Marketplace guided developers creating commercial plugins for Atlassian products.

  • Wrote new initial tutorial for Atlassian's UI framework that described how to build plugins that met Atlassian User Interface standards.

  • Wrote a new tutorial for the Atlassian Plugin SDK. Created a training deck for plugin building and delivered it at Atlassian Developer 2011. Later, while Lead Writer, directed a UX test of the SDK by one of my junior writers.

Samples

These samples are primarily PDFs that are print-outs of other content formats.

  • Bitbucket 101 tutorial as a PDF printout of Confluence pages. This 101 was frequently in the top 10 content on Atlassian Google Analytics. The sample includes the community comments. I really loved using comments to interact with the Bitbucket users.

Bitbucket's successful 101 documentation was a project I was most proud of. The 101 had users contribute a quote to community repro, that repo became the 3rd largest repo on BitBucket.

  • The Atlassian SDK Getting Started this sample was expended from a pre-existing single page how. A shorter piece was perceived "easier" but users hated it. I rewrote the tutorial into two tracks (Linux/Windows) and included an example plugin. The result was well received by Atlassian SDK developers.

  • Atlassian SDK Training was directed at new or beginner plugin developers. I wrote and delivered to developers at the Atlassian Bootcamp. I've provided my training deck . Users were given a tree of lab instructions, source, and resources.
